Visitors and residents in the Geraldton CBD will be able to find their way around a lot easier with the installation of new wayfinding signage.
With thanks to funding from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme, eight signs featuring a colourful map of the city centre with relevant icons of landmarks, key destinations as well as pedestrian information and amenities have been installed.
The project was a recommendation from the Growing Greater Geraldton Destination Management Plan developed in conjunction with the local tourism industry.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the new signs were a welcome addition.
“There has been constant feedback from the tourism community about the opportunity for improvement in tourist wayfinding within Geraldton with improved and consistent signage and we have responded to that call,” he said.
“These beautifully designed signs not only help people find their way to many of our key locations, but also add vibrancy to our CBD.
“Our city is a very walkable and accessible destination and we are promoting that through the new installations.
“It’s also great to have the interaction with the Visit Geraldton website and is a reminder for all businesses to keep their Google maps information updated so they will appear on mobile devices.”
The new signs feature QR codes people can scan to take them straight through to the Visit Geraldton website to find out more about what is currently around them.
Icons on the signs include the Esplanade, Geraldton Visitor Centre, Lighthouse, the Butterfly Wall, HMAS Sydney II Memorial, St Francis Cathedral and much more.
The wayfinding project was made possible with $20,000 in funding from Round 4 of the Stronger Communities Program.
Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price MP said the program was a wonderful initiative for community organisations.
“I’m delighted to announce that 14 organisations in my electorate of Durack have been successful for a variety of projects with a tourism focus,” she said.
“These projects will increase tourism and will add economic benefit to the towns that have received the funding.”
You can see the signs at locations including the Francis Street carpark, Geraldton Visitor Centre, the Geraldton and Beresford Foreshores, Forrest Street, Trans West Bus Terminal at the Old Railway Station, Marina and Marine Terrace.
