Local producers and growers in Greater Geraldton and the Midwest have been highlighted in a comprehensive guide that will be distributed at this year’s Perth Royal Show.

A collaboration between the City of Greater Geraldton and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, A Taste of Greater Geraldton Food Capability Guide was officially launched this week.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said more than 20 companies from the Midwest are featured in the guide that was designed to help local growers pitch for further business, either as individuals or as a collective group.

“Our Growing Greater Geraldton Growth Plan focusses on providing support to enable our local food industry to grow and this is the first step in giving the South West some real competition in this area,” he said.

“This guide highlights the region’s diverse and vibrant range of produce by promoting our food growers, producers and manufacturers - to caterers, buyers and investors.”

The guide highlights the region’s importance in the production of food in Western Australia, in particular wild catch fisheries, intensive horticulture, agriculture and livestock farming.

Mayor Van Styn said he was excited to see what opportunities would be unlocked for local producers and growers.

“With an abundance of fresh clean and green produce at our doorstep, the city’s food and beverage offering is growing and now includes honey, rum, canola oil, craft beers, goat cheese, lupin flour and more,” he said.

“Our food production profile is being raised further with the likes of local company Indian Ocean Fresh awarded Champion Australian Seafood for their locally grown Geraldton Kingfish at the recent prestigious Australian Food Awards 2019 and Illegal Tender Rum Co winning global awards for their rum.

“As a thriving transport and logistics hub we are globally connected and competitive, with many businesses wanting to supply products into Asia and other international markets,” he added.

A Taste of Greater Geraldton will be distributed at the upcoming Perth Royal Show at the new look Midwest stand developed by the City’s Economic Development team in collaboration with the Midwest Group of Affiliated Agricultural Societies.
