Diverting waste from landfill will soon be quicker and easier thanks to a $1.3 million grant from the Building Better Regions Fund to upgrade the Meru Waste Facility.
The $5.285 million project includes construction of a new and larger waste transfer station, a materials processing facility, installation of a second weight bridge and an upgrade to the existing one along with upgrades to the power/fibre optic network and The Bowerbird (formerly known as the Tip Shop).
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn welcomed the funding which will greatly assist the City’s commitment to diverting 60% of waste from landfill by 2030.
“I’d like to thank the Australian Government for supporting these upgrades which couldn’t have come at a better time,” he said.
“Our existing transfer station has reached capacity and the volume of cardboard and plastic bottles being recycled by the community is steadily increasing.
“The new transfer station will be larger and enable better separation of waste streams which will assist in diverting even more reusable or recyclable items to The Bowerbird and away from landfill.”
To keep up with the growing cardboard and plastic bottle volumes the baler will be rehomed in the new processing facility, which will enable The Bowerbird to expand its floor space to accommodate the anticipated influx of items that can be recycled and reused.
The upgrade to the existing weighbridge along with the installation of a second weighbridge will enable quicker access to the facility.
Construction upgrades will take approximately 12 months to complete once the tender award has been awarded.
