Local community representatives and volunteers gave the Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia a very warm welcome during his visit to Geraldton this week.

As part of the Governor’s Regional Visit Program, the City of Greater Geraldton hosted a Civic Reception at the Queens Park Theatre last night.

Mayor Shane Van Styn welcomed the Governor to Geraldton and thanked him for having the Midwest on his program schedule.

“The last time I saw the Governor was in Washington where he was the Ambassador of Australia to the USA, so it’s lovely to have him visit us here in Geraldton,” he said.

“We understand the Governor is committed to advocating for vibrancy in the arts, culture, education and tourism in the state so we’re delighted to welcome him to see what our community have been achieving in this space.

“It was great to see a number of different sectors and industries represented at the event with a number of local volunteers and organisations in attendance.”

The Civic Reception included a Welcome to Country from Derek Councillor, an address from the Mayor and the Governor, and the opportunity for local volunteers and community members to meet the Governor.

The Regional Visit Program is an opportunity for the Governor to continue to develop a good working knowledge of the State, and engage with community and local government representatives, residents, volunteers, schools, health professionals, local businesses and the many other people and groups that make up the fabric of our rural communities.

The visits enable the Governor to learn about the initiatives being undertaken in each region.

The Governor will spend three days in Geraldton visiting various tourism operators, government bodies and local organisations, with the itinerary of activities developed in coordination with the Mid West Development Commission.
