This November will mark a momentous occasion in navy history as the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the HMAS Sydney II is commemorated.

Described as Australia’s greatest naval tragedy, hundreds will gather to pay respect to 645 crew members who lost their lives at sea after the ship sunk off the Geraldton coast in 1941.

To honour the milestone and the Midwest’s deep connection with the HMAS Sydney II, a number of commemorative proceedings will take place.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was an important anniversary and the various events will hold significance not only to the community, but many descendants who have links to the HMAS.

“The tragedy of the HMAS Sydney II holds a very special place in many hearts and we know the 80th anniversary of the sinking is a milestone many people will be commemorating,” he said.

“Like years in the past, we will welcome hundreds to Geraldton for this significant occasion, as well as to our world-class HMAS Sydney II Memorial for the moving sunset service.

“There will also be a number of special events as part of the commemorations and I hope people take the time to pay homage to such a rich part of Geraldton and Australia’s history.”

A service for the Unknown Sailor will take place at the Geraldton War Cemetery on 19 November at 10am.

The commemorative sunset service will take place on Friday 19 November at the HMAS Sydney Memorial at 5pm.

Special guests, veterans and descendants are invited to an afternoon tea at the QEII Seniors and Community Centre prior to the sunset service, with transport to and from the Memorial being offered. This event will be invite only with RSVPs required.

There will also be special displays and exhibits at the Museum of Geraldton and the Geraldton Regional Library, with more details to be released closer to the date.

Theatre 180 are bringing the HMAS story to life with a mix of live theatre and high impact cinema. Acclaimed actor Myles Pollard will lead the West Australian cast including Morgan Dukes and Tom O’Sullivan.

The show will take place at Geraldton Orana Cinemas at various times from 13 November to 21 November with tickets available at https://theatre180.com.au/show/sydney-ii-lost-and-found/
