Council closes contentious fence opening

A concealed opening in the fence at the west end of St Georges Close in the Bluff Point Estate will be left closed in an effort to increase community safety.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said Council's decision to permanently close the access way was based on feedback the City had received from local residents.

"In December last year, Council took the unusual step of holding a plebiscite with area residents, business owners and absentee property owners to ensure everyone had the opportunity to have their say on the fence opening," he said.

"The results of the survey were tight with 53% of respondents having said they couldn't live with an opening in the fence stating vandalism, anti-social behaviour and criminal activity in the Estate increased when the access way was open.

"We also acknowledge the numbers were very close and decisions such as these are never easy to make as no matter what you decide, it will affect the local community.

"Community safety is always a Council concern which is why we made the decision to keep the fence closed," he added.
