Thousands of motorists, hundreds of school students, pedestrians and businesses have heaved a sigh of relief since the recently constructed Cathedral Avenue and Sanford Street roundabout was opened to the public.

At the official opening of the roundabout today, City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the completion of the much anticipated project meant Council was able to deliver another CBD legacy project.

“This long awaited roundabout is now making it easier for the nearly 9000 vehicles who use Cathedral Avenue every day to safely navigate this busy intersection,” he said

“Upgrading this intersection, the scene of many accidents and countless near misses over many years, has been a long standing CBD legacy project this Council is very pleased to finally put to bed.

“I’d like to thank the Australian Government for providing $1.27million in generous Black Spot funding that covered 100 percent of the costs to build the roundabout.

“It looks amazing and congratulations to all involved for a job well done.”

The City undertook the construction project utilising 20 of the City’s approved, local annual supply contractors and staff from the City’s Works and Parks Teams to build the roundabout and landscape the area.

Mayor Van Styn also acknowledged those impacted during the three month long construction period.

“I’d also like to thank all the local businesses, organisations, visitors to the City Civic Centre, QPT patrons and all the parents and students of the five schools in the area for their assistance, support and patience while we were building the roundabout,” he said.

“The construction was, without a doubt disruptive, but the result is well worth it.”
