Foreshore Change Rooms and Storage Facilities Project
Works to install new changing rooms and a storage facility next to the Rubik’s Cube toilets on the Geraldton Foreshore are scheduled to begin the last week in January 2026.
The project, prompted by a petition from a local ocean swimming group, reflects the City’s commitment to responding to growing community needs and enhancing the Foreshore as a key recreational destination.
The project involves installing two refurbished 10-foot sea containers. One will be fitted out with lockers and two unisex changing cubicles allowing users to change privately and safely store their belongings while enjoying the Foreshore, the other will be used as a secure storage facility for beach wheelchairs and beach matting.

FAQs
Why are change rooms and a storage facility being built on the Foreshore?
The project was prompted by a petition from a local ocean swimming group calling for the installation of changing rooms and storage facilities for beach accessibility equipment at the Geraldton Foreshore. It reflects the City’s commitment to responding to growing community needs for facilities that meet the diverse needs of the many people who use the Foreshore every day.
What will the new facilities look like?
The project involves installing two refurbished 10-foot sea containers, that will be decorated with public art at a later date to enhance their appearance. One container will be fitted out with lockers and two unisex changing cubicles allowing users to change privately and safely store their belongings while enjoying the Foreshore. The second container will be used as a secure storage facility for beach wheelchairs and beach matting.
Will there be any showers and toilets in the change rooms?
No, the change rooms will not include toilets or showers. The change rooms have been intentionally located next to the Rubik’s Cube toilet facilities, allowing those amenities to be used solely as toilets rather than informal change areas. For added convenience, the existing nearby outdoor shower will be relocated adjacent to the change rooms. This layout will improve functionality and allow for the more efficient and convenient use these amenities.
Where are the containers being installed?
The two containers will be installed next to the Rubik’s Cube toilets at Champion Bay. This location was chosen as it sits alongside the path that connects the beach with Rubik’s Cube toilets and the Foreshore Promenade.
Why were sea containers chosen?
Refurbished sea containers provide a cost-effective, quickly deployable and fully removable solution allowing the City to relocate the structures in the future should coastal conditions change due to sea level rise or other climate related impacts. They have been architecturally designed to complement the maritime setting of the Foreshore and nearby port to ensure the change rooms are functional, adaptable, and visually consistent with the surrounding amenities including the nearby Rubik’s Cube toilets.
Where is the beach accessibility equipment currently being stored?
The beach wheelchair and matting is currently stored in the nearby Surf Lifesaving facility.
Will the beach wheelchair storage facility have MLAK key access?
Yes, it will.
How do I go about getting access to the beach wheelchair?
The City offers two beach wheelchairs on the CBD Foreshore. They are community resources and bookings to use them can be made online or in person on the day if they are available by calling (08) 9956 6600 / Assistant contact: 0407 471 828. The online booking form is available on the City’s website here
When will the new facilities be open for community use?
Site preparation works are scheduled to begin the week of Tuesday 27 January 2026 and during the works, car parking in the vicinity of the project may be unavailable. The works include relocating selected rocks, carrying out detailed excavations, and pouring the footings. After the footings have fully cured the containers can be installed, followed by the construction of the associated access paths and relocation of the outdoor shower. Public art will be added once the containers have been installed. The estimated date of completion is the end of March 2026.
How much does the project cost?
The City has allocated $160,000 in the 2025/26 Budget towards the project.
