Phelps Street/Chapman Road Roundabout Bicycle Bypass

Over the past couple of years there has been a rise in active transport use and the popularity of bike riding for commuting to and from the City Centre has been steadily increasing.

Currently, the on road northbound bike lane on Chapman Road heading out of the City Centre ends at the Phelps Street roundabout and starts again on the other side at the Beresford Foreshore.

Connecting these two sections so bike riders can safely continue their journey is a top priority in the Geraldton 2050 Cycling Strategy.

Rather than modifying the intersection to accommodate an on road bike lane, a 280m long and 2.2m wide red asphalt off road path will enable northbound cyclists riding on Chapman Road to completely bypass the intersection instead.

The $292,000 project has been jointly funded by the City and the Department of Transport through the Western Australian Bicycle Network Grants Program

Construction of the off road bicycle bypass by local contractor Redcat Holdings is scheduled to begin on 18 March 2024 and will take approximately five weeks to complete.
