Spalding revitalisation goes green

The beautification of the planned new road and pedestrian connection between Bogle Way and the Mitchell Street Community Centre recently got underway with the greening of the vacant land where aged public housing was recently removed.

Staff from the Department of Communities, Centacare and the City of Greater Geraldton along with Community Nursery Volunteers braved the rainy weather on the day to plant 100 seedlings and three small trees in the newly created open space including a native Jam Tree, a bush tucker tree with edible seeds that were traditionally ground into flour.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the joint planting day was a great way for everyone working on the revitalisation of Spalding to team up on a small project.

“Spalding has been undergoing a lot of changes recently and there are a number of agencies and organisations who have been working on various projects to make this happen,” he said.

“Beautifying the vacant land was a great opportunity for everyone involved in revitalisation works to come together and really enhance a public space the community will enjoy for many years to come.

“We look forward to working together with these agencies on more small projects when upgrades to the AMC Park and Mitchell Street Community Centre get underway in the new year.”

The Department of Communities began revitalisation works in the area by removing a number of aged public houses on Bogle Way and Sullivan Court to create new road connections onto Mitchell Street and onto the Robinson Street extension from Mitchell Street to Broome Street.

The State Government is investing significantly into the renewal of Spalding with $9 million of funding allocated.
