Four City projects win big at prestigious engineering awards

Four City projects have received top honours at the recent 2024 Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) WA Excellence Awards.

Spalding Revitalisation Project Stage Two, Railway Street Safe Active Street, the CBD Education Precinct Roundabouts and the Sunset Beach Coastal Resilience Program were awarded for their excellence in significant engineering or innovative practices in traffic safety management.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune congratulated the staff and thanked partnering organisations and community members who helped design and deliver the award winning projects.

“On behalf of the Council I’d like to congratulate the staff on winning these prestigious awards and thank them for their dedication to improving community safety and the liveability of our City,” he said.

“I’d also like to thank our project partners including the Department of Communities, Department of Transport, Lotterywest and Federal and State Governments’ Black Spot Programs for their support and generous grant funding to deliver these much needed projects.

“Most of all, I’d like to thank the community members who worked closely with the City to design and deliver these projects that we all benefit from every day.”

Spalding Revitalisation Project Stage Two won the Excellence in Innovation Award (Regional) and received Highly Commended for Best Public Works Project Greater than $5 million Award (Regional).

The Railway Street Safe Active Street won the Best Public Works Project under $2 million Award (Regional) and the Sarkis Petrossian Award for Innovative Practice in Traffic Safety Management.

The CBD Education Precinct Roundabouts won the Excellence in Road Safety Projects Award. This project included the reconstruction of the Cathedral Avenue/Sanford Street and Durlacher/Maitland Street intersections into roundabouts and the upgrade to the Cathedral Avenue/Maitland Street roundabout.

The Sunset Beach Coastal Resilience Program won the Best Public Works Project $2 million - $5 million Award (Regional). The program involved data collection and monitoring, construction of Geotextile Sand Container structures, dune rehabilitation works and the managed retreat of coastal nodes.
