Increasing the liveability of Greater Geraldton and beautifying suburbs continues to grow with more than $2.8 million in the 2022/23 Budget allocated towards improvements to parks, reserves and public open spaces.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said revitalising Spalding and improving the sustainability of public open spaces are top priorities.

“Over the past five months the City has been working closely with the Spalding community to develop a plan to revitalise the AMC Park and area around the Mitchell Street Community Centre,” he said.

“Once the final plan is completed the City will use $2.3 million we have received from the Department of Communities to develop the plan and deliver as many community’s aspirations as possible for the area.”

The City will also be renewing Bellimos Park in Wandina and Muir Park in Strathalbyn to create more sustainable green spaces that use less water.

“This year we’ve allocated $538,000 to upgrade the paths in these two parks for improved access, renew their playground equipment and establish water wise garden areas,” he continued.

“Replacing thirsty exotic plants with native plants and reducing the amount of lawn we irrigate is a top priority and part of the ongoing implementation of the City’s Parks Master Plan.”

Works in Chapman River estuary to ensure this unique place of considerable environmental and cultural significance is safeguarded for future generations will also begin this year.

“The Chapman River Regional Park is one of the most visited parks in the City and it’s vital we maintain it so it can be enjoyed by everyone,” added Mayor Van Styn.

“So we’ve also set aside money in the Budget to start implementing the Chapman River Estuary Action Plan once community consultation on the plan is completed.”
