Keen eyes will have noticed a splash of colour weaving its way throughout the Foreshore and Marine Terrace as part of a local community group’s mission to ‘yarn bomb’ Geraldton with more than 29,549 pieces of knitted and crochet works.
The yarn bomb challenge was set in motion when the Knit Wits received an email from a community member challenging the group to beat a record set by Bridgetown in 2018.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn was impressed by the sheer dedication of the group to meet this lofty goal.
“The Knit Wits is a group of 20 or so people who have been working tirelessly over a 12 month period to create so many vibrant pieces,” he said.
“These colourful crafts are sure to bring a smile to anyone passing by the area and I wish the group every success in reaching their goal.”
Community members are encouraged to contribute their own pieces of knitting or crochet to the effort, with the group taking donations until 27 September.
The final tally will be revealed on 30 September with a large banner unveiling that will take up residence on the fence at Lot 601 on Marine Terrace.
The Knit Wits will also be hosting an exhibition and school holiday activities for children of all ages from 10am until 4pm on 3-6 October at Fitzgerald Hall.
Items will remain on display throughout the CBD until 7 October.
The Knit Wits community group has been creating goods for the needy throughout the Midwest and surrounding districts for 16 years.
Once the collection of items has been decommissioned they will be donated to various community groups.
If you have items you would like to contribute to their record breaking attempt please contact Knit Wits Coordinator Joy Reinhardt on 0439 644 675.
