‘We’re All Part of the Story’ is the theme for this year’s Australia Day event, which is set to take place at Stow Gardens on the Geraldton Foreshore this month.
Members of the community are bound to enjoy the free entertainment, live music featuring 11-piece cover band ‘Proof’ and local performances from ‘Soundscapes of the Midwest’, food trucks as well as the welcoming of new Australian citizens.
Winners of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards will also be announced and celebrated.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said Australia Day was a time to reflect, respect and come together.
“We have made many adjustments to this year’s Australia Day commemorations to ensure the community’s safety and wellbeing is upheld, but it will still be a great day at our premier location on the Geraldton Foreshore,” he said.
“Family and friends will be able to come together for a picnic amid live tunes, bush poetry, performances from locals and epic food trucks.
“Australia Day is a tough day for some, so it’s important that our programming is respectful to all cultures.
“We have also made the event in line with the State Government’s COVID-19 Roadmap because we’re not out of the woods yet.”
For those in Mullewa, the local swimming pool is the place to be for entertainment and activities. Enjoy free entry from 8am, a barbecue breakfast and pool inflatables.
Those who have registered for the Geraldton event will be treated to a free picnic blanket featuring powerful Australia Day messaging thanks to sponsorship from the Australia Day Council. There are a limited number of blankets available, so early registration via Eventbrite is essential.
Programming officially kicks off at 3pm and concludes at 9.30pm on Tuesday 26 January at Stow Gardens on the Geraldton Foreshore.
While much will be happening on the day, a much-loved instalment will not be going ahead as it presents too much of a risk to the community.
“We would love to be able to hold a fireworks show as we know how much the public love them but because of the numbers they attract it is extremely hard to manage with the COVID-19 pandemic requirements,” Mayor Van Styn added.
“The health and safety of our community has always been, and remains, our number one priority. As a result, we have had to make some really tough decisions this year and not having fireworks is one of them.”
Members of the community wishing to attend the 2021 Australia Day event will be required to register for free tickets via Eventbrite by clicking here.
Tickets can also be acquired in person at the Civic Centre and QEII Community and Seniors Centre.
On the day, attendees will have to scan in using the SafeWA app to ensure community safety is upheld.
The event area will be fenced off to comply with COVID-19 requirements and advice from the State Government’s Chief Health Officer. Upon arrival, attendees will be assigned an area with a picnic blanket from a COVID-19 marshal.
Australia Day 2021 commemorations in both Geraldton and Mullewa are alcohol and smoke free events.
