The community have reaffirmed their confidence in Shane Van Styn after he was re-elected as Mayor for the City of Greater Geraldton in Saturday’s election.

Five Councillors were also elected and were all sworn in at last night’s Special Meeting of Council where Tarleah Thomas was chosen as Deputy Mayor by her fellow Councillors.

Incumbent Councillors Tarleah Thomas, Bob Hall and Simon Keemink were all re-elected.

Council also welcomed newcomer Kim (Butch) Parker and former Councillor Peter Fiorenza.

Mayor Shane Van Styn thanked the community for their support.

“I’ve been overwhelmed with messages of support from the community and I’d like to genuinely thank everyone that took the time to vote,” he said.

“I look forward to serving the Greater Geraldton Council for the next four years and doing everything I can to make our community the best possible place.

“I’d also like to congratulate all candidates who put their hand up to run in this year’s election – it’s never easy putting yourself out there like that but it’s great to see so many passionate community members.”

Mayor Van Styn extended his personal thanks to former Deputy Mayor Neil McIlwaine for his time on Council.

“Neil has served on Council with absolute distinction and I consider him a mentor of mine,” he said.

“I’m truly grateful for his unwavering hard work and dedication and helping me get to where I am today.

“On behalf of the community and Council, I’d like to thank Neil and also former Councillor Michael Reymond for their time and dedication in making such a difference in our community.”

Neil McIlwaine first came onto the then City of Geraldton Greenough Council in 2007 and was elected as Deputy Mayor from 2009 to 2011 and re-elected as Deputy Mayor for the City of Greater Geraldton from 2011 to 2019.

A total of 34.86% of electors voted in the election. This is the first election for the City of Greater Geraldton without a wards system.
