Street meets to educate on FOGO trial

With the small scale trial of kerbside collection of food and organic waste right around the corner – street meets to educate the community will commence this week.

As part of the trial, 500 randomly selected house across nine City suburbs will soon be receiving their lime green lidded Food Organic Garden Organic (FOGO) bins in the lead up to the first FOGO collection taking place the first week in March.

A series of ‘Street Meets’ will be held in the neighbourhoods of the selected households over the next two weeks where City staff will be on hand to answer questions about the trial and deliver free kitchen caddies to trial participants.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the FOGO trial is one of two waste reduction programs being introduced this year and encouraged the community members selected to attend the street meets.

“Studies show FOGO makes up 40% of the waste in our rubbish bins, so if we are serious about reducing waste this is the place to start,” he said.

“FOGO material is a valuable commodity which should not be dumped in landfill which is why we are going to collect it and process it locally to make compost for the City and community to use.

“I’d encourage everyone who has already received a letter in the mail about being randomly selected for the trial to attend the street meets to receive their caddy and learn more about the trial.”

For those selected in the trial, street meets will be held in the following areas from 5:30pm to 6:30pm:

-18 February, Rangeway – Levy Street Park

-20 February, Spalding - Corner of Clarkson St and Lawley Street

-25 February, Beachlands - Corner of Fraser St & Crowther St

In June, the State will be implementing a Container for Change scheme. All eligible glass, plastic and aluminium bottles can be taken to at least one refund point in Geraldton by June 2020 for a 10 cent refund.

“The container scheme will make a huge difference in the amount of waste going into our landfill and hopefully reduce the drink bottle litter we see along our roads, beaches and in our bushland,” Mayor Van Styn added.

“Until the scheme starts, I’d like to encourage residents to continue to drop off their clear or common white type 1 and 2 plastic milk, mineral water, soft drink, juice and water bottles into the blue bins located across the City region.”

The community is reminded that there are several options to recycle almost anything locally.
