Shredder to cut down on waste of space

Conserving valuable air space at Meru Landfill is set to improve significantly with the installation of a new multipurpose waste shredder and trommel.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn applauded the latest addition to the facility.

“We know the sentiment surrounding waste and how much of an important issue it is to our community and as a result, we are always looking at ways to reduce and reuse,” he said.

“This shredder allows for us to shrink the overall size of raw material coming through the gates, which in turn increases the compaction rate of materials entering landfill.

“It can also divert large items out of landfill, and these changes will see an increase in the lifespan of the lined cell.”

Cleanaway have invested in the shredder and trommel equipment as part of its 10 year contract with the City, and Cleanaway General Manager WA and NT – Solid Waste Services, Brad Gornall said there were additional benefits with the new set up.

“This equipment can be utilised for other waste diversion programs such as mulching green waste, shredding mattresses and it can even crush construction and demolition material,” he added.

“After shredding the material will go through a self-cleaning trommel screener to remove contamination, which assists in producing a higher quality end product for community use.

“Not to mention there is usually a mobilisation cost associated with such waste diversion programs, but these will now be slashed due to the shredder and trommel remaining on site at all times.

“It’s a win-win for everyone.”

The shredder and trommel have been in operation at Meru Landfill since the start of the month.
