Two dynamic textile exhibitions will launch this week at Geraldton Regional Art Gallery (GRAG).
Opening at 6pm Friday 24 March, Stitched and Bound and Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist are set to wow Gallery-goers with their innovative forms of expression.
Stitched and Bound is a biennial exhibition of selected submissions from West Australian artists who work in quilting and fibre.
Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist by artist Susie Vickery charts the travels of 18th century French botanist Jacques-Julien de Labillardiere who sailed the WA coast in 1792. Vickery’s work is presented as a series of cabinets of curiosities.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn is looking forward to the new exhibitions.
“Quilting has long been part of Australian culture and I am intrigued to see how modern artists make use of this medium to tell their own stories,” he said.
De Labillardiere played an important role in the history of our state by producing the first written works describing the plants of Western Australia, and I am interested to see this modern adaptation of his journey.
“Both exhibitions are sure to impress and I encourage everyone to check out these fantastic displays.”
Tickets to opening night on Friday 24 March are limited, so patrons are requested to register their attendance via Eventbrite.
A free workshop by Susie Vickery on Sunday 26 March entitled “Stitching Flora” has already been booked out. However, there is still availability to attend an Artist Floortalk by Vickery at 11.30am Saturday 25 March at GRAG followed by the Craft Film Festival. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.
Stitched and Bound and Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist will be on display from Friday 24 March until Friday 19 May 2023.
