Australia’s most prestigious fine art prize is making its way to the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery (GRAG) next month and features works from the nation’s leading portrait artists.
The 2020 Lester Prize had more than 750 entries but only 40 portraits were shortlisted as finalists, demonstrating the quality and calibre of the exhibition.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was an honour to host the 2020 Lester Prize.
“This is Australia’s most recognised art prize with over $80,000 in prize money and we are hosting it at GRAG for the next five weeks for all the Midwest to see,” he said.
“A majority of the finalists are from Western Australia, which may be inspiring and heartening for our creative community.
“I strongly encourage those interested in attending opening night to RSVP as soon as possible. This premiere exhibition opening is sure to sell-out.”
The exhibition is a collaboration between The Lester Prize and GRAG, and will be on display from Saturday 3 July to Friday 6 August. Those who would like to attend the opening event on Friday 2 July at 6pm can RSVP by clicking here.
The following day, on Saturday 3 July, figurative artist Jill Ansell will host a portrait art workshop where participants will learn about facial proportions, how to check face measurements, tonal underpainting and colour mixing.
Tickets are just $30 and the class runs from 12.45pm to 3.30pm at GRAG for adults and children over 16. Purchase your ticket by clicking here.
