Two powerful exhibitions showcasing the artworks of significant Aboriginal men will launch this week at Geraldton Regional Art Gallery (GRAG).
Opening at 6pm on Friday 2 June, Faces and Places Revisited and He is Myself: The Art of Nyaparu (William) Gardiner each capture unique aspects of the lives of each artist.
Faces and Places Revisited presents a comprehensive picture of the art practice of Irwin Tasman Lewis (1939-2020), drawing on imagery of flora, fauna, families and a series of poignant ‘face’ paintings expressing the life and country of this significant Yamaji artist.
He is Myself: The Art of Nyaparu (William) Gardiner features over 50 artworks from Mr Gardiner’s short but prolific artistic career and is a retrospective of the nationally-acclaimed artworks created in South Hedland’s Spinifex Hill Studio.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn encouraged everyone to take the opportunity to view the works.
“It’s fitting that the launch of these exhibitions takes place during National Reconciliation Week,” he said.
“The national conversation is focused on certain emotive topics, and no matter where you stand on the issue it is important to stop and reflect on the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“I strongly encourage everyone to take a moment to check out these incredible works.”
Tickets to opening night on Friday 2 June are limited, so patrons are requested to register their attendance via Eventbrite.
Both Faces and Places Revisited and He is Myself: The Art of Nyaparu (William) Gardiner will be on display until Sunday 30 July.
