Council has cast its eyes to the east for its first big investment in the suburbs this financial year with the construction of a new footpath along Abraham Street in Karloo.
Extending from Utakarra Road through to Assen Street, construction of the 1220m long footpath on the west side of the street will begin on Thursday 18 July 2019 and take approximately eight weeks to complete.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said suburbs east of the North West Coastal Highway are the big winners in the 2019/20 Budget.
“The suburbs are our residential areas where we live and play,” he said.
“They are also where our kids go to school and I am pleased that the largest single investment in the suburbs this year, at just under $380,000, will be the construction of the much needed footpath on Abraham Street, one of the main roads students use to walk or ride their bikes to and from Champion Bay Senior High School.
“Since the opening of Verita Road and the Abraham Street Bridge, traffic has increased significantly long Abraham Street and we need to ensure pedestrians, cyclists and motorists can all safely use this busy commuter route.”
Rangeway Utakarra Karloo Progress Association President Corryne Bull said the footpath will greatly improve the quality of life for residents of all abilities.
"The Abraham Street footpath is another fantastic long awaited addition to Rangeway-Utakarra- Karloo (RUK) and it's exciting to see new infrastructure being built in older suburbs,” she said.
“School children, residents, parents with prams and people on gophers or in wheelchairs will no longer have uneven, sandy surfaces to contend with or have to walk unsafely on the road.
“We hope improvements like this will help make RUK more appealing to young families and the number of first home buyers will gradually increase as the area is affordable, features a number of sporting grounds and is close to other popular amenities.”
