Childhood memories are the trigger for Graham Miller’s photographic series Playing the Man which will launch at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery (GRAG) on Friday night.
The amusing images are a celebration of the Australian Football League (AFL) and a wistful look at the past. Amidst the humour, some serious themes are explored including masculinity, identity and cultural difference.
Opening on the same night, Now You See Me is curated by local Ingrid Horn. The exhibition surveys artworks by women artists in the City of Greater Geraldton’s Art Collection.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn looks forward to opening night.
“It’s going to be another thought-provoking and great night out as we officially launch Playing the Man and Now You See Me at GRAG,” he said.
“On one level, we have an exhibition exploring football in the 1970s – an era known for players looking a certain way and getting into biffs and brawls - and on another, we have an exhibition surveying female artists’ unique stories and perspectives.
“We’re proud to host these two shows that stimulate the mind, showcase different perspectives, and address traditional ideas of gender and identity.”
Playing the Man and Now You See Me launch at GRAG on Friday 13 August at 6pm. Those attending are invited to wear their favourite AFL Guernsey, vibrant colours and/or red lipstick.
RSVP is essential and bookings can be secured through Eventbrite by clicking here.
Both exhibitions will be open at GRAG until Sunday 19 September.
