The City of Greater Geraldton is calling community members to voice their opinion on Main Roads proposed new corridor, which bypasses Geraldton to connect Dongara and Northampton.
Announced just this morning, the proposed road starts near Dongara on the Brand Highway, travelling past Geraldton to link with the planned Oakajee Port and connecting to North West Coastal Highway just outside of Northampton.
The plans are part of a long-term solution for freight, separating regional traffic from local traffic as well as removing heavy vehicles from town sites throughout the region.
Main Roads are now commencing a community feedback period, which City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn is encouraging Geraldton ratepayers to be part of.
“We were surprised to learn of the public project plans this morning after many months of requesting information,” he said.
“As it appears, the whole length of the bypass is an entirely new road running alongside the existing highway and other City roads.
“The City is yet to receive details about which parts of the existing North West Coastal Highway will be handed back as a local road for ratepayers to maintain.
“Council will be considering its position on the proposed alignment at a future Council meeting,” added Mayor Van Styn.
In 2015, Main Roads identified three possible routes between Dongara and Geraldton and a further three between Geraldton and Northampton.
The plan bypassing Geraldton has been deemed the State Government’s preference.
