Seafood, culture and adventure is on the agenda for Geraldton’s newest signature event ‘Shore Leave’ which has received significant funding.
Presented by Tourism Geraldton Midwest, the newly announced festival will take place over four days in Geraldton from 6-9 May – with a massive program celebrating all things ‘Midwest’.
Set to embrace a maritime and coastal theme, the vibrant proposal has been in the pipeline by a number of key bodies and will include a large local food component.
Hon Peter Tinley MLA Minister for Housing; Fisheries; Veterans Issues; Asian Engagement, made an announcement in Geraldton today which will see $300,000 towards the inaugural event.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the event announcement was an absolute huge drawcard for the region.
“This is a massive announcement for the Midwest and a signature event is something that many key bodies have been working towards for some time,” he said.
“The City is very supportive of Shore Leave and it aligns well with our Strategic Community Plan goals and objectives.
“It’s great to hear the event will have a coastal, maritime and seafood theme which definitely celebrates our identity and culture.
“This event will really shine a light on our unique region and we wish event organisers all the best in seeing this come to fruition,” he added.
The event proposal includes elements such as seafood markets, a long-table Abrolhos Islands dining experience, walking tours and a swag of family-friendly events.
Tourism Geraldton Midwest Chair Matt Rutter said he was thrilled with the funding announcement.
“Shore Leave will be a celebration of the many adventures and experiences found in Geraldton and the Midwest,” he said.
“The event is expected to draw visitors from across the state and positively impact tourism operators in the Midwest region.
“Although Shore Leave is planned to be a headline attraction for intrastate tourism, it is also an opportunity for locals to reconnect and celebrate what makes the region they call home, so unique.
“We're grateful for the Government and local industry's support, such as the Mid West Port Authority, Geraldton Fishermen's Co-operative and the City of Greater Geraldton that has helped this event become a reality,” he added.
Last year, the City, Tourism Geraldton Midwest and the Mid West Development Commission came together to fund an Event Development Report.
One of Western Australia’s leading event and marketing agencies - Project3, were engaged to deliver the concept profile for the annual event.
In addition to today’s funding announcement, event organisers are also seeking funding from Mid West Ports, and the City which will be put to Council at Council Meeting in February.
