The region is well and truly on showcase in next year’s Midwest Art Prize, with the highest amount of local talent being short-listed in history.

More than 20 Midwest artists will have their works displayed alongside 46 other Western Australian artists in the prestigious exhibition following the judges’ selection last week.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was proud to see so much local talent in the mix.

“Our arts scene is incredibly vibrant, and I’m delighted that such a high amount of local artists are featured in the 2019 Midwest Art Prize,” he said.

“In the past we have never seen this amount of locals feature in the exhibition and it’s amazing that our creatives are pushing the bar.”

City of Greater Geraldton Acting Coordinator Gallery and Cultural Development Sara Walker, Mundaring Arts Centre and Midland Junction Arts Centre Curator Greg Sikich and the University of Western Australia Chief Cultural Officer Ted Snell formed the selection panel and had the tough job of shortlisting 254 entries to 72.

Some of the local artists featured in the 2019 Midwest Art Prize include Marina Baker, Debbie Crothers, Tyron Merritt, Roy Merritt, Mark Miragliotta, William Upchurch, Luke Barlow and Helen Ansell.

“We’re also delighted to announce that Incite Security have come on board to sponsor the Midwest Artist Award,” added Mayor Van Styn.

The Midwest Art Prize officially launches on Saturday 16 February at 6pm.

A big thank you to the sponsors of the initiative Rio Tinto, RedFM, Ian Blayney Local MLA and Incite Security.
