This Friday will see the launch of two new exhibitions at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery (GRAG), which have unique links to our region.
The Alternative Archive: Truths, Myths and Legends of the Midwest features works from local artists and covers topics such as the loss of Aboriginal language, quirkiness of private collections, stories of people in the region and connection to the land.
Brian McKinnon: My Story illustrates artist Brian McKinnon’s experience growing up in the old reserve Blood Alley, Geraldton and the ongoing challenges of Aboriginality in today’s world.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said those living in or passionate about the Midwest would enjoy the two exhibitions.
“All of the artwork featured in GRAG this Friday centres around the Midwest in one way or another – it might be the portrait of a familiar face, drawing of a landmark, completed by a local artist or photograph of our landscape,” he said.
“There’s definitely something for everyone in both exhibitions, so I recommend attending this Friday’s opening night and taking in all the pieces with some of the artists in the room.”
The Alternative Archive: Truths, Myths and Legends of the Midwest features work from 12 artists in the region and is curated by local Ingrid Horn with help from Anna Louise and GRAG’s Eve York.
Brian McKinnon: My Story displays the artist’s journey through pain caused by racism and the passage to where he is today. The paintings are intended to cause feelings of tension, struggle and isolation.
Officially launching on the same night is GRAG’s sculpture, Protective Memory, which was installed earlier this year. It resembles a human figure and is completed by Western Australian sculptor April Pine.
Members of the community are invited to attend the launch of the exhibitions at GRAG on Friday 31 May at 6pm. Light refreshments will be provided at the opening.
The following day at 10.30am there will be floor talks from artist Brian McKinnon, The Alternative Archive lead curator Anna Louise and artist Craig Allsop.
