Construction of an ablution block at one of Geraldton’s most loved and visited icons will commence next month after Council awarded the tender to a local contractor.

Geraldton Building Services and Cabinets (GBSC) were awarded the tender for construction of the new facilities at the HMAS Sydney II Memorial designed by Smith Sculptors.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was excited to see the project finally begin.

“This has been quite the journey and we are excited that we have reached a great outcome, not only for our local volunteer guides, but also for the thousands of people that visit the site every year,” he said.

“As one of TripAdvisor’s top 10 landmarks in Australia, the one current toilet at the Memorial just isn’t sufficient.

“It took some time to ensure we implemented the right design, but we believe the new facilities will be in keeping with the memorial elements and its surroundings, whilst meeting the requirements of the Conservation Framework.

“A big congratulations to local business GBSC on being awarded the tender.

“It’s great to see these construction projects putting a much needed boost into local jobs and the local economy,” he added.

Since 2014, the City has worked closely with the HMAS Sydney II Memorial Committee to develop ablution block designs.

The chosen design developed by Smith Sculptors was approved by Council in April 2019.

Construction of the $333,000 facility will begin in August 2020 and estimated completion is late February 2021.
