New features as well as tried and tested favourites will adorn this year’s Australia Day event on the Geraldton Foreshore.

Yamatji Naaguja man Derek Councillor will again lead a special Australia Day Smoking Ceremony where he will invite new citizens and community members to come together.

Alongside the Smoking Ceremony there will also be a range of new experiences including an interactive Aboriginal Sand Mural, boomerang painting workshop and Soda Sessions circus workshops.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn is looking forward to the event.

“Australia Day can be an emotive occasion for many in our community and this has been carefully considered in our planning of this event,” he said.

“Having Derek Councillor lead a Smoking Ceremony is a fantastic way to recognise our Community Citizen of the Year Award winners and welcome our newest Australians.

“In addition, I am looking forward to seeing the diverse range of performances that will be hitting the main stage at Stow Gardens.”

Geraldton and Mullewa’s Australia Day Ambassador Ken Gibbons will also be on-hand to spread the word about the importance of access and inclusion in our communities.

In Mullewa, community members will be able to hang out at the Doc Docherty Pool from 8am where there will be a traditional BBQ breakfast followed by the Community Citizen of the Year Awards.

Geraldton’s event will finish up with the Europcar WA Fireworks Show taking place at approximately 8.30pm but may vary due to weather conditions. Updates regarding this will be available on the City’s social media throughout the day.

The Australia Day event on the Geraldton Foreshore is an alcohol-free event that will take place on Thursday 26 January from 7am - 9pm.

The City of Greater Geraldton would like to thank valued sponsors Lotterywest, Europcar WA and the National Australia Day Council for their ongoing support.
