Recent flooding in the Gascoyne has seen the Shire of Carnarvon call upon the City of Greater Geraldton for assistance with the town’s recovery.

While Greater Geraldton avoided much of the weekend’s severe weather, the Shire of Carnarvon received 150mm of rain in 24 hours causing devastation to local farms, roads, businesses and infrastructure.

Environmental Health Officers from the City of Greater Geraldton will now make their way to Carnarvon to help with food premise inspections, contaminated water as well as inundated waste water systems.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was important to lend a helping hand.

“The Shire of Carnarvon is doing it tough at the moment and they are in our thoughts after the weekend’s severe flooding,” he said.

“Helping each other during hard times is part of the Australian culture and while we are devastated for Carnarvon, we are pleased to be in a position to help and support them.

“Carnarvon provide much of the state and nation with fresh produce so this impacts all of us and is our duty to help if we can.”

Shire of Carnarvon Acting Chief Executive Officer Gary Martin gave his thanks.

“The Shire of Carnarvon is grateful for the assistance the City of Greater Geraldton is providing. Having additional Environmental Health Officers during this challenging time is much appreciated,” he said.

The City of Greater Geraldton’s Environmental Health Officers will be in the Gascoyne for one week but may remain longer if required.

Many of the roads in the Gascoyne remain closed but some have reopened and travellers are to proceed with caution.
