Acclaimed Australian artist, writer and filmmaker Shaun Tan will have his paintings, drawings and sketches on the walls of the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery (GRAG) for all to see this Friday night.
Rules of Summer features the original illustrations of the artist’s picture book, which shares the same title. The artworks explore the friendship between two young boys and how they are challenged by difficult and irrational situations.
Opening on the same night is Genesis 2020 featuring artworks from Geraldton Secondary Students, and I’m Still Here, an audio-visual work produced by Dane Yates, musician, composer and nephew of Geraldton resident Clare Lynch. In this collaborative composition, Clare reflects on key moments in her life, around the lived experience of Alzheimer’s and disability.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he is looking forward to opening night.
“It will certainly be a big night at GRAG as we launch not one but three unique exhibitions,” he said.
“I’m delighted that we are able to showcase works from one of Australia’s most prolific artists alongside up and coming local creatives.
“How exciting for youngsters to see their work featured at GRAG and then alongside a big name artist in Shaun Tan.”
Rules of Summer might look familiar as artist Shaun Tan was also the concept artist for Pixar’s WALL-E and directed Academy Award-winning short film The Lost Thing.
