A 9.6 meter glass bottom boat which was launched this week has showcased the Geraldton marine services industry by being fully locally manufactured.

The first of its kind in the region, the waterjet boat was launched yesterday and is set to work in conjunction with existing tourism operators to provide tours.

Boat owner Peter Burton – who is also a TAFE lecturer, used all local businesses for the completion of the vessel through Geraldton’s marine services industry.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn officially launched the glass bottom boat and said it was a huge step in the right direction for tourism growth in the region.

“This boat is going to be able to provide passengers with a very unique look at our coastline,” he said.

“It is going to be perfect for tours out to the Abrolhos Islands and to be able to see some of our stunning wildlife.

“We haven’t had something like this here in Geraldton before and I applaud Peter for working hard to make his dream a reality.

“It’s great to see that we have the capability here in Geraldton to build specialty boats and this is a prime example.”

The boat is designed to carry 10 passengers and is perfect for people who want to check out the ocean but don’t particularly want to get into the water.

The launch of the vessel ties in with the launch of the Maritime Services Network capability statement developed as an initiative of the Growing Greater Geraldton Growth Plan, which outlines the various local marine businesses and services.

Tours on the glass bottom boat will commence later this month once the surveying is complete.
