Regional library staff from all over the Midwest met in Geraldton recently to discuss the future of libraries in WA.

Staff from the City of Greater Geraldton, Shire of Chapman Valley, Coorow, Cue, Dandaragan, Irwin, Mingenew, Murchison and Three Springs attended a full day in-service and training workshop organised and hosted by the Geraldton Regional Library.

Among special guests present was Chief Executive Officer (State Library WA) and State Librarian Margaret Allen, who presented on the current WA Public Libraries Strategy.

City of Greater Geraldton CEO Ross McKim met with Ms Allen and he said the future of public libraries was very promising.

“Some of the topics discussed in the WA Public Library Strategy include introducing a single access library card system across the State,” he said.

“The Strategy also talks about introducing a new model to support regional and remote Libraries which would be extremely beneficial for many shires in the Midwest.

“We are very proud to have hosted the event and it was great for so many local governments in our region to come together to discuss the future of public libraries which is something very important to all communities.”

Local governments, community organisations and the Western Australian community have all been invited to have their say on the Strategy.

Input for the WA Public Library Strategy closes on 29 March 2018, and is available via the State Library WA website slwa.wa.gov.au/about-us/corporate/wa-public-libraries-strategy
