Extended trading hours awaits go ahead from Minister

The City of Greater Geraldton remains optimistic about the introduction of a 12-month trial of extended general retail trading hours as the decision for it to go ahead remains with the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.

After being passed by Council in February, the application is sitting with the Department who have said the Minister for Commerce William Johnston, will make a decision in the coming weeks.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said supporting community consultation would be a major factor in the Minister’s decision.

“Both the City and the Midwest Chamber of Commerce and Industry have provided the Department with unwavering results for the community’s support of the trial,” he said.

“The City’s survey saw 74% of community members vote in favour of the trial and 67% of the Chamber’s members were also in favour.

“We are just playing a waiting game now while the formalities go ahead and we await the Minister’s approval.”

Council passed the decision unanimously in a bid to stimulate local economic activity, by activating business precincts, and – most importantly, to meet the expressed needs and preferences of the community.

When the decision is made, retailers will be given ample time to ensure the necessary measures are in place for the extra opening hours.
