Exhibitions make bold statement at Gallery

Three new exhibitions are set to make a bold statement at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery this Friday night and they encompass everything from history, virtual reality and photography.

Science meets spirit in the thought-provoking Collisions - a virtual reality experience that has been making waves around the country and takes you to the land of Indigenous elder Nyarri Nyarri Morgan and the Martu tribe in the Western Australian desert.

Batavia: Giving voices to the voiceless follows new discoveries by researchers from the University of Western Australia and the Western Australian Museum into the 1629 wreck of the Dutch ship Batavia and the mutiny, murder and incredible feats of survival it sparked, as reinterpreted by Paul Uhlmann and Robert Cleworth. Together, their work presents a collective understanding of the Batavia wreck through photogrammetry, scanning (X-Ray, MRI), digital prints, virtual tours, the mechanics of the camera obscura, artist books and paintings.

Trespasses opens on the same night and explores an ambivalent relationship with Australian places and colonial history through a gothic lens. This exhibition features artworks from three well-established West Australian contemporary artists Thea Constantino, Rebecca Dagnall and Anna Nazzari.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was going to be a big night at the Gallery.

“We are starting the New Year with a bang and launching three exhibitions on the one night,” he said.

“Each exhibition is very unique and I think they will appeal to all members of our community - particularly the Batavia wreckage, which took place off our coastline.

“Collisions has also been taking out awards around the globe and it is fantastic to have it in Geraldton.”

Batavia: Giving voices to the voiceless will be accompanied by an artist talk on Saturday 20 January at 10.30am. The Geraldton Museum are also hosting a public lecture about shipwrecks in Australia on Thursday 18 January from 6-8pm.

The three exhibitions will officially launch at the Gallery this Friday 19 January at 6pm.

Light refreshments will be provided at the opening. All community members are invited to attend the exhibition opening and the dress code for the evening is smart casual.

Please note: Batavia: Giving voices to the voiceless features nudity and violent images.
