The City of Greater Geraldton is on track to be part of Australia’s longest electrical vehicle (EV) charging network with the State Government gearing up to install four electric vehicle charging bays on the Foreshore.
The State Government’s proposed EV highway will run from Perth to Kununurra, along the southwest coast to Eucla and east to Kalgoorlie with the installation of up to 98 charging stations at 49 locations across the State beginning in late-2022. The WA Electric Vehicle Fast Charging Network will be fully operational by January 2024.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said we can’t afford to miss out on the growing use of EVs.
“Electric vehicles are already travelling around the State and with the installation of public charging bays the City will automatically become an EV destination,” he said.
“After assessing a number of locations for charging stations, some of which were ruled out due to power network constraints in certain areas, the Francis Street Carpark location near the 24 hour free RV bays was chosen.
“Strategically placing the EV charging stations in the CBD it will create a bit of a tourism/recharging precinct by giving drivers the opportunity to stretch their legs and spend some money locally while their vehicles recharge.”
The EV network will have charging stations about every 160kms as most electric cars can run between 300 and 500 kilometres in one charge, with some achieving ranges above 500km.
Over the coming weeks preparation of the EV charging site will begin which include testing the area with ground penetrating radar to inform the development of detailed designs.
The costs to install the EV charging infrastructure are budgeted under the McGowan Government's $21 million Electric Vehicle Fund for Western Australia.
The initiative is part of the State Government's Electric Vehicle Action Plan and is key to boosting EV uptake in WA which helps continue the transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The installation of EV charging infrastructure in Geraldton is part of the State Electric Vehicle Strategy to prepare for the transition to low and zero-emission electric vehicles.
