Draft Geraldton CHRMAP public comment period extended

The public comment period for the Draft Geraldton Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan report (CHRMAP) has been extended to 3 September 2018.

City of Greater Geraldton CEO Ross McKim said the City was responding to requests from the community for more time to review the report.

“The public comment period for the Draft Geraldton CHRMAP report, which began on 3 July 2018, has been regularly promoted in both traditional and social media. However, the City has recently received requests from the community to extend the deadline so residents can have more time to go through this important document and submit their feedback,” he said.

To assist the community and stakeholders in making submissions, the feedback forms request comments relating to specific aspects of the draft report. This includes the option to provide comments as to how at risk assets identified by the community were valued and, what any recommended long-term adaptation pathways may look like.

A key feature of the draft report is the identification of assets that are at risk now and assets that could be at risk in the future. The report provides recommendations as to how to adapt in the short term and how to plan for long-term risks associated with erosion and inundation.

At the end of the public comment period the Draft Geraldton CHRMAP report, including a report on all public submissions received, will be presented for Council adoption and inform subsequent coastal planning policy development.

“After the report has been adopted, Council can then begin deliberations on the recommended adaptation pathways with a view to developing a Coastal Planning Policy that outlines the actions that will be taken when erosion and inundation trigger points are reached within each of the 12 coastal management units,” Mr McKim said.

“The Coastal Planning Policy will take time to develop and will involve the evaluation of the managed retreat pathways and other options available to Council.”

The original 42-day public comment period has now been extended to 60 days. The new submission deadline is 4pm on Monday 3 September 2018. The Draft Geraldton CHRMAP Report is available on the City website here along with an online submission form. Hard copy submission forms are also available at the City Civic Centre.

Development of the Draft Geraldton CHRMAP was funded by the Western Australia Planning Commission through the Coastal Management Plan Assistance Program.
