Council has responded to community concerns regarding construction of the new animal management facility on Flores Road by overturning their decision in favour of utilising the existing Pass Street location to build the new facility.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said security of tenure for the Flores Road site and an alternative offer put to Council by the developer of the land where the aged Pass Street facility is located were also contributing factors.
“Council’s original motion required security of tenure for the life of the facility be assured,” he said.
“City staff and I were unable to initially achieve the level of certainty required and as such refused to sign the Public Transportation Authority’s (PTA) original agreement.”
“During subsequent discussions with the PTA the developer of the land located on the corner of the NWCH and Eastern Road came forward with an alternative proposal.
“Coupled with community concerns Council decided to proceed with the Pass Street option.”
Plans to have the Geraldton Dog Rescue co-locate to the new animal management facility have also changed with the organisation locating the City’s overflow facility on Davis Road once the new building has been completed.
