Opportunities at the Tip Shop are set to flourish with the City of Greater Geraldton to take on management of the facility.
Building on the already positive work from previous organisation MEEDAC who have managed the facility for more than four years, the reuse shop will now be fully run by the City.
At last month’s Council Meeting, Councillors agreed to undertake refurbishments at the building and authorise a retail service for the disposal and sale of second hand goods.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he looks forward to seeing the Tip Shop get a new lease on life.
“We thank MEEDAC for their years of dedication at the facility,” he said.
“It’s now time for the building to get a freshen up and to take on a new direction.
“We know reuse and recycling is high on our community’s priority list and we look forward to seeing this facility used to its full potential.”
The opportunity for the City to manage the facility will help to improve the rates of diversion from landfill, with a predicted 150 tonnes of waste to be diverted.
As well as supporting the State Waste Avoidance Strategy 2030, overall the facility will reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill by reclaiming household items for repair, reuse and resale.
The reinvigoration of the Tip Shop will support the development of a potential social enterprise model in conjunction with facilitating the building of capacity in the not for profit sector.
Working in partnership with various not for profits, companies, clubs and individuals, the City will deliver ongoing workshops focussing on training and skill development.
The Tip Shop will close temporarily on June 30, while it undergoes refurbishments.
When it re-opens, it will be opened to the public from 8am to 3pm Thursday to Monday. Closed Tuesdays and open on Wednesdays 8am-12pm for drop offs.
More information about the refurbishments as well as employment opportunities will be released in the coming weeks.
