With the holiday season just around the corner City of Greater Geraldton Staff have once again conducted their annual Christmas tradition of donating to the Geraldton Foodbank.
Since 2008, City Staff have come together in the lead up to Christmas by bringing non-perishable food items to work and collecting cash to be included in their yearly donation to Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation.
Foodbank Western Australia CEO Greg Hebble said the staff’s annual donation is always a big help but more needed to be done to feed people in need.
“This year City Staff donated $159.95 in cash and 67.2kgs of food which is equivalent of more than 450 meals,” he said.
“Although this will feed a family of four for more than a month, a lot more donations are going to be needed to ensure people don’t go hungry over the Christmas holiday.”
City of Greater Geraldton CEO Ross McKim encouraged other organisations and businesses in the City region to also make Foodbank donations before Christmas.
“The Geraldton community has always been very generous when it comes to helping others in need,” he said.
“It’s not too late to put an empty box in the staff kitchen or lunchroom to collect donated canned goods or packaged food, which could make all the difference for fellow community members fighting hunger this holiday season.”
In the first five months of the 2018/19 financial year, Foodbank Geraldton has already distributed and provided more than 350,000 meals, averaging approximately 38,000kgs a month.
