City Services Update #16: Phase 4 extension

Published on Wednesday, 4 November 2020 at 2:14:52 PM

The City of Greater Geraldton has been closely monitoring the WA COVID-19 Roadmap and its implications for the reopening and reinstating of City facilities and programming.

Based on the latest health advice from the State Government, Phase 4 restrictions have been extended which involves selected venues such as theatres now permitted to hold up the 60% capacity whilst also exempt from the 2sqm rule.

With 1.5m social distancing and various hygiene requirements still in place, the City wishes to advise the following:

Facilities:

The Queens Park Theatre (QPT) will remain closed until 2021. This allows City staff time to prepare the venue and plan for the re-opening of future shows. With many external hirers coming from interstate, it is not realistic for show presenters to commit to any dates this year, or early 2021. The QPT aims to re-open its doors mid-late February subject to easing of current restrictions.

Restrictions at the QEII Seniors and Community Centre and the Geraldton Multipurpose Centre remain unchanged. Both facilities remain open with social distancing and hygiene measures in place.

Rocks Laneway has also reactivated with the Geraldton Project holding a number of community events and projects.

From Monday 9 November, the Aquarena will extend its opening hours and also re-open the outdoor pool. Opening hours will be as follows:

  • Monday to Thursday: 6am to 7pm
  • Friday: 6am to 8pm
  • Saturday: 8am to 6pm
  • Sunday: 9am to 6pm

Group fitness classes and swimming lesson programs will also be reinstated. Enrolments for swimming lessons which commence on Monday 16 November, are also now open.

Timetables for these activities are available online via City’s website or alternatively at the Aquarena reception.

Due to current restrictions, Aquarena patrons are reminded that bookings for the Hydrotherapy Pool are still required and can be made over the phone or at the Aquarena reception.

The Mullewa Swimming Pool has re-opened and opening hours for the summer season is 11am to 6pm Tuesday to Sunday.

Opening hours at the Geraldton Regional Library will change from Monday 23 November, including a return to Monday morning and Thursday evening openings. Regular Storytime and Rhymetime sessions on Thursdays and Fridays will also recommence, with a small change to the Storytime start time which will now be 10am.

The new Library opening hours will be:

  • Monday – 9.30am - 5pm
  • Tuesday – 9.30am - 5pm
  • Wednesday – 1pm - 5pm
  • Thursday – 9.30am - 6pm
  • Friday – 9.30am - 5pm
  • Saturday – 9.30am - 1pm
  • Sunday - Closed

Events:

Christmas on the Terrace usually held in December won’t go ahead in its normal format. The City is looking at alternative options in support of local retailers and to facilitate activation in the CBD.

The annual HMAS Sydney II Memorial commemorative service will take in a digital format with people able to watch the ceremony via pre-record on the City’s social media channels. The wreath laying will still take place at the Memorial on the day, with plans to stream that component to the public also via the City’s social media channels.

Planning for Australia Day 2021 is underway and will be guided by relevant restrictions at the time. Nominations are now open for Community Citizen of the Year Awards and community members are encouraged to nominate someone who deserves to be acknowledged for making a difference in their community – the nomination forms can be found on the City’s website.

Sundays by the Sea will kick start in January 2021 and will run through to April to make the most of suitable weather conditions.

External event organisers will be required to have a COVID plan and make announcements regarding social distancing.
