City Services Update #15: QPT and Events

Published on Friday, 18 September 2020 at 3:31:46 PM

With the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic still being felt, the City of Greater Geraldton continues to make necessary changes and adaptions to adhere to current restrictions.

The City has been closely monitoring the WA COVID-19 Roadmap and its implications for the reopening of the Queens Park Theatre (QPT). Based on the latest health advice, Phase 5 of the Roadmap, which was due to be implemented on 29 August, has been delayed for a further two months.

Guided by the state government’s directions and taking into account ongoing uncertainty, the City has determined the QPT auditorium will remain closed until the end of December 2020 for any shows and events that require a seated audience.

This decision affects all tentative bookings for the QPT auditorium currently in the calendar to the end of December 2020. The only activities that will be delivered at QPT during this period are those accessing alternative spaces in the facility outside the auditorium or delivering a modified program.

Please note that this temporary ‘end date’ is also provisional and these conditions may be extended into 2021 subject to health and state government advice at that time.

The City has also made decisions for annual events which are set to take place in 2020.

The annual HMAS Sydney II Memorial commemorative service will take in a digital format with people able to watch the ceremony via pre-record on the City’s social media channels. The wreath laying will still take place at the Memorial on the day, with plans to stream that component to the public also via the City’s social media channels.

The City has been in discussions with the Seniors Week Committee and this year’s Seniors Week program, including the Mayor’s Mystery Bus Tour, will not take place.

Christmas on the Terrace usually held in December won’t go ahead in its normal format. The City is looking at alternative options in support of local retailers and facilitate activation in the CBD.

One of the City’s biggest events WoW Fest, did not go ahead as scheduled on the Easter Long Weekend in April 2020. Set to feature Hilltop Hoods, the City continues to work with act promotors to re-schedule the WoW Music Fest for a suitable date in the future.

Tickets holders were able, and can still get their ticket refunded for WoW Music Fest 2020 or they can keep it and it will be honoured for the re-scheduled music event featuring Hilltop Hoods.

Planning is underway for Australia Day 2021 and nominations are now open for Citizen of the Year Awards. We encourage you to nominate someone in your community who you think deserves to be acknowledged for making a difference in their community – the nomination forms can be found at https://www.citizenshipawards.com.au/nominate/
