Community connection has been a driver behind the City of Greater Geraldton’s newest initiative - ‘commUNITY’.

commUNITY is a project designed to maintain and enhance community connection at a time where social distancing and self-isolation means physical interaction isn’t possible.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the new initiative gives the community a sense of continuity and familiarity by offering a variety of support and information, along with new and regular ongoing programs.

“This is an exciting project for us and one that the whole community can be involved in,” he said.

“We’re encouraging people to stay at home during this health crisis and we want to deliver our programs to your homes.

“I hope people embrace this with open arms, and we encourage you to reach out and tell us what else you’d like to see.”

As part of commUNITY, a number of different elements will be rolled out.

‘CGG TV’ will encompass a video series of online programming such as Sunset Yoga, sessions from the Library and what was ‘Sundays by the Sea’ on the Foreshore – will now become, ‘Sundays by the Stream’.

The various digital broadcasts will commence this weekend for ANZAC Day with elements of the service posted to the City’s Facebook page.

Various online and social media platforms will deliver the myriad of programming which include, health and wellbeing, performing arts, fitness, craft and more.

The City has also created a dedicated webpage for all COVID-19 related information and resources, which include things to do and things to stay connected.

“We wanted one place where our community could easily find everything they needed,” Mayor Van Styn added.

“As well as things to do and stay connected, we’ve created a hub of resources and important information.”

Other elements of commUNITY include phone calls to seniors in the community to ensure their health and wellbeing.

Local business Red Dust Holdings have also come on board to deliver ‘essential packs’ to those in need. Packs include things such as hygiene essentials and canned goods with thanks to The Hamper Co Geraldton.
