The City of Greater Geraldton has struck a historic partnership with Linfen City in China after signing a letter of intent.

Signed this week in China by Mayor Shane Van Styn and Mayor of Linfen City Liu Yuqiang, the letter between the People’s Government of Linfen City and City of Greater Geraldton promotes cross border cooperation between both cities, and most importantly – it is part of the China Trade Mission.

Mayor Van Styn said it was a historic moment for Greater Geraldton’s future.

“This strategic partnership opens up a lot of big and exciting opportunities for the Midwest region as we move forward,” he said.

“We are already seeing promising opportunities born from our collaboration with China including the prospects in mining, successful education exchange programs, opportunities for freight trade as well as big breakthroughs in the China tourism market.

“The letter of intent we have signed with Linfen City solidifies their commitment to doing business with Geraldton and we know it means growth for our City and region.”

The letter of intent states a cooperative approach including collaboration in fields such as trade, tourism, mineral development and education.

One element includes the build of a China-Australia website which will allow small business to access China export and imports.

Mayor Van Styn is currently in China attending the Tourism Development Conference of Shanxi Province as part of the China Trade Mission.

Midwest business Illegal Tender Rum is also part of the delegation and important business connections are being forged.

Illegal Tender Rum General Manager Hayley Wells said it had been an incredible opportunity.

“To be able to showcase our multi-award winning products to key stakeholders in the industry throughout China is invaluable and we may not have had the ability to do that without this trade mission,” she said.

“Developing a relationship and mutual trust between producer and distributor is essential for us as a business.

“Because of the premium nature and the quality assurances that we can guarantee with our products we need to be certain that we trust the distributor/wholesaler, which cannot happen without these international efforts and meetings.”
