Mullewa resident Tony Critch has made a significant contribution to the City of Greater Geraldton’s Art Collection after donating two paintings by Perth based artist, Murray Gill.

Holding a strong cultural connection to the region, Murray Gill was born in Mullewa and attended school in Mullewa in his early primary years before moving to Perth.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the new additions to the City Collection are highly valued.

“Murray is a renowned artist and has a swag of accolades under his belt,” he said.

“From a number of awards including WA Artist of the Year in 1971, Murray’s work has been exhibited in Perth, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.

“We are very honoured to have two of his works in our City Art Collection and a huge thank you to Mr Tony Critch for this very generous donation.”

The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is home to the City’s Art Collection, which is comprised of over 475 artworks, principally paintings and works on paper.

The City Collection began in 1959 with a bequest of 39 artworks to the then Town of Geraldton by Western Australian philanthropist, the late Sir Claude Hotchin.

Along with Murray Gill and other Mullewa artist Ailsa Small, the City Art Collection boasts works by local and WA contemporary artists and nationally significant artists such as Norman Lindsay, Robert Juniper, Tracey Moffatt, Howard Taylor, Julie Dowling, Hans Heysen, Elizabeth Durack and more.
