A citizen’s jury of everyday people will begin their review of City services over a series of workshops kicking off on Thursday evening.
The 30 member jury panel will receive in-depth information on 36 services, including the costs to provide them, examine how they work and then make recommendations to Council regarding the delivery of these services in the years to come.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said Council has a strong history of implementing recommendations made by jury panels.
“The 2014 Range and Level of Service Community Panel made a number of recommendations to increase and decrease the levels of some City services, all of which Council has since implemented,” he said.
“Some of these included investigating recycling options for organic waste, closing the Aquarena outdoor swimming pool in winter months, using more sustainable plants in parks, increasing the use of online platforms to engage the community and closing the QPT Box Office during the day.”
The Panel also made a variety of suggestions that the City and Council also implemented including creating an annual signature event called ‘Wind on Water’ Festival, making better use of social media, introducing photographic billboards on the highway entrances to the City and simplifying the Community Grants application process.
Mayor Van Styn said it is Council’s priority is to provide good value for money whilst ensuring City services reflect the wants and needs of the community in line with their willingness to pay for them.
“We look forward to hearing what the panel has to say about our services and, where possible, implementing the recommendations they make on behalf of the community they will be representing, to Council.”
