With enhancements works on the northern portion of the Beresford Foreshore nearing completion the popular stretch of coastline will be available to the community just in time for the school holidays.
Although some minor planting and shade structure roofing installation are yet to be completed, the community will be able to access a portion of the Foreshore whilst the finishing touches are made following the removal of the fences this weekend.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was pleased to see the works on one of the City's largest infrastructure projects, whose enhancement design was developed in close consultation with the community, finally coming to an end.
"Over the past few months it's been a real treat to watch the enhancement works progress and see how the community's top priorities for the Foreshore redevelopment which included upgrading the shared coastal path to a promenade, planting more trees and shrubs and installing more shade structures, seating, tables and drink fountains come to life," he said.
"The project team has worked extremely hard to complete the first 1.4km section of the Beresford Foreshore between Mabel Street and the Mitchell and Brown Retravision building and I know the community is just as excited as I am about the being able to utilise this vastly improved stretch of coastline once again."
Removal of site fencing along Chapman Road will begin on Thursday 20 September 2018. This work requires sections of the Chapman Road northbound lane to be closed with one way traffic flow reduced to 40km/hr under traffic control between 9am and 3pm on weekdays and 7am and 5pm on the weekend. Motorists can expect delays and are encouraged to use alternative routes during this time.
The Beresford Foreshore Coastal Protection and Enhancement Project began in January 2017 with the construction of breakwater extensions and rock revetments to mitigate coastal erosion. Completion of the Midalia's Beach section of works is estimated to be the end of October 2018.
The $23.1 million Beresford Foreshore Coastal Protection and Enhancement Project is jointly funded by the State Government Regional Grants Scheme project managed by the Mid West Development Commission and the Mid West Ports Authority with the City contributing $1.8 million in funding towards amenities.
