One of Australia’s bravest men will travel to the region for Australia Day next week as the official ambassador.
Constable Tim Britten’s heroic actions during the 2002 terrorist bombing in Bali saw him receive the Cross of Valour – the highest Australian Bravery Award.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he looked forward to welcoming Constable Britten to the region.
“Tim is an ambassador and role model who will be warmly welcomed to the community,” he said.
“Only five people in Australia have been presented with the Cross of Valour and Tim is one of them.
“He inspires courage, hope and resilience in the face of adversity.”
Following the Bali bombing, Constable Britten placed his life in danger by repeatedly entering the burning Sari Club to rescue an injured woman and to search for survivors.
In 2003 he was presented with the Cross of Valour and in 2006 he became an Australia Day Ambassador.
Constable Britten said the best thing about Australia Day is coming together as a nation.
“Australia Day is one of my favourite days of the year because everyone comes together and celebrates being an Australian,” he said.
“I’m honoured to represent the Australia Day Council and Australians around the nation as an Ambassador.
“One of my favourite responsibilities on the day is welcoming new Australians at Citizenship Ceremonies and seeing their joy and excitement.
“It is such a special day and I look forward to visiting the Geraldton and Mullewa Communities” added Constable Britten.
As the Ambassador, Constable Britten will officially open the Champion Bay Surf Lifesaving Club Open Water Swim Challenge, visit Mullewa for the Australia Day Active Citizen of the Year Awards, deliver the official Australia Day Address and present certificates at the Citizenship Ceremony in Geraldton.
The Australia Day Ambassador program is brought to the City of Greater Geraldton by the Australia Day Council.
