Appeal opens to aid cyclone destruction

As communities continue the clean up after widespread destruction and damage left by Tropical Cyclone Seroja, the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund (LMDRF) has been activated.

Many homes and buildings have been destroyed and up to 30,000 residents were left without power after the cyclone made landfall as a category three storm on Sunday bringing wind gusts of up to 170 kilometres per hour.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn appealed to the local community to donate to help the Midwest community at this time of need.

“Our heart goes out to our Midwest community who have been hit extremely hard by this cyclone,” he said.

“Especially Northampton and Kalbarri, who have experienced heartbreaking destruction in their communities.

“It’s times like this when we realise how wonderful our Midwest community is, and we are seeing so many people band together to offer all sorts of assistance.

“With the LMDRF now open, we ask our community to dig deep where they can and donate to help our neighbours who need it most.”

Administered by the City of Perth, the LMDRF is Western Australia’s official state emergency fund and all funds raised as part of the appeal get spent directly on the response to Seroja.

People can donate now to the LMDRF at www.appealswa.org.au.

“The LMDRF Board has already pledged $500,000 for the cause and we cannot thank the Board and the City of Perth and for leading this,” Mayor Shane Van Styn added.

The Fund is operated by an independent board and donations over $2 are tax deductable. The costs of administering the fund are absorbed by the City of Perth, so all money raised will go directly to those who need it most.
