Vehicles on beaches and in the bush
Local Law Community Consultation

View background information sheet

The City of Greater Geraldton is seeking out individuals and representatives from community groups who use Geraldton’s beaches and rivers. The City is reviewing its Property Local Laws, how they are communicated and how to encourage compliance with the laws.

If you are a surfer, fisher, naturalist, cyclist, walker and especially if you use a vehicle on the beaches or in the bush, the current Property Local Laws affect what you can do and where. For example: Driving vehicles, riding horses and bicycles is a common activity at some beaches and bushland reserves, however under the current laws some of these activities in some areas are actually illegal.

If enforcement of the current laws or changes to the laws may affect your activities and lifestyle, please register to attend the public meetings and contribute to the decision-making.

You can contribute by:

  • Download or request a hard-copy of the background information sheet
  • Registering online to attend one of three public workshops:
    • North – Drummonds (Tuesday 6th March)
    • South – Cape Burney (Thursday 8th March)
    • Central – Geraldton (Saturday 10th March)
  • Share this news with your friends and encourage them to register their interest

For information on the current laws, view the current Local Government Property Local Law (PDF).

The City has engaged consultants to assist with this process, and the consultants are the main contacts for further information.

The questions that will be addressed through this process include:

  • How aware are users of the current laws and implications for their activities?
  • How would strict enforcement of the laws restrict activities such as fishing, surfing, cycling?
  • What are the best options for better communicating, educating and enforcing the laws?
  • What role could different groups and individuals play in communication, education or enforcement?
