The City of Greater Geraldton is governed by the City of Geraldton-Greenough Parking and Parking Facilities Local Law 2008.

The purpose and effect of this local law is to provide parking regulation, management and control within the City of Greater Geraldton.

It applies to vehicles parking throughout the City and also includes signs and how they are used, parking stations, paid parking, parking for the disabled, and parking on reserves and foreshores.

The Parking and Parking Facilities Local Law 2008 defines a vehicle as including:

“every conveyance, not being a train, vessel or aircraft, and every object capable of being propelled or drawn, on wheels or tracks, by any means.”

Signs – how we communicate parking requirements

Signs usually communicate parking information. Always look for and read the instructional signs when parking your vehicle. The signs used throughout the City comply with Australian Standards. The main reason the City issues parking infringements is because motorists do not read or obey the parking instructions on signs.

Some of the most common signs used throughout the City are:

No Stopping This sign indicates a section of the roadway or verge where vehicles are not permitted to stop unless it is necessary to avoid a collision.

No Parking This sign indicates a section of the roadway or verge where vehicles are not permitted to park. Passengers may be set down and picked up, but this action must be completed quickly or it may be determined the vehicle is parked.

The above signs may also show day and time restrictions. This means that parking prohibitions apply during the times and days shown. Words such as “carriageway” or “verge” can also be included. The verge interpretation applies to the road verges whereas the carriageway applies to the constructed road service.

Day and time restrictions will be shown like this:

MON – FRI
7.30 – 9.30am
2.30 – 4.30pm

Keep in mind these basic rules and you should be able to avoid a fine.

Make sure you take the time to read the parking signs.

Check that you know the times you are allowed to park and allow yourself time to return before your parking expires.

Ensure you have parked your vehicle within the lines or areas permitted.

Ensure your valid parking ticket is clearly displayed before leaving your vehicle.

Enforcement is the last resort in the City’s efforts to ensure that it is as easy as possible for everybody to park in the City of Greater Geraldton.

Parking for disabled

Parking bays for people with a disability are usually placed in the most convenient locations. A current ACROD sticker must be displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle. Parking in an ACROD bay without displaying a current ACROD sticker is an offence. See Parking for People with Disabilities.
